The Nigerian national football team, the Super Eagles have opted out of their return leg game against Libya in the Afcon 2025 qualifying match.
This was confirmed by the team captain Troost- Ekong via his X handle
According to reports, the Aircraft chartered by the NFF, to transport the players had their landing rights revoked mid air as the Tunisian Pilot of the aircraft had already started his descent into Benghazi Airport. They were diverted to an airport in Al-Abaq, which is more that two hours drive by road to Benghazi. The team was left without security, food water and Internet connection.
William Troost-Ekong labelled the incident a disgraceful mind game, which is not new to African Football.
He further narrated how the pilot went to get accomodations for him and his crew but he was granted but his Nigerian crew denied on the orders of the Libyan government.
Ekong further said that they have reached out to the Nigerian government to intervene and petition CAF. He equally said that the team was ready loose the three points than risk the dangerous journey by road.
In a related development, Leon Balogun, a former Super Eagles defender has shown his displeasure with the current happenings in Libya and have called on CAF to intervene and hold someone accountable.
