The Ebonyi State Government has sealed four mining companies for non-compliance with the stated Community Development Agreement (CDA) rules and regulations
The mining CDA rules and regulations require mining companies to contribute to the development of the communities where they operate.
The state commissioner for Solid Minerals and Natural Resources, Hon. Chidi Onyia in his statement that the affected mining companies had ample time to do the needful since last year but decided to intentionally ignore the rules, and that going forward, the State Government will no longer condone such neglect of host communities by mining companies.
The affected mining companies include: Anli Mining and Investment Ltd, Shenglong Mining (at Eziulo, Ishielu Council) and China Solid Rock 1 and 2 (located on Ngodo Amachi, Afikpo Local Government Area)
Hon Onyia was emphatic that the affected companies will remain shut until they comply with the state government’s directive.
“The mining Act clearly states that every miner must prepare a CDA to benefit and uplift the community wherein they operate,” Onyia said. “But most mining companies in Ebonyi State have ignored this. This is against the dictates of the state, and we won’t take it anymore.”
He criticized Shenlong Mining for providing only 1Million naira for a year to the host community, calling it a fraudulent CDA despite the huge size of the company, while some smaller companies can go as far as constructing tarred roads for their host communities.
However some of the affected mining companies have pledged to work with the state government to resolve the issue.
