Some leaders and organizers of the #EndBadGovernance protests which rocked the nation from August 1 to 10 2024 will be arraigned today.
The protesters are being tried for alleged treason, inciting mutiny and intent to destabilase the nation. They will be arraigned before Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court .
According to the six count charge filed by the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, ten person were named including a British Citizen, Andrew Wynne as defendants
The charge sheet marked FHC/ABJ/CR/454/2024 shows the accused are facing charges that borders on treason, destabilizing the nation, intimidating the President and destroying the NCC office in Kano.
The IGP Egbetokun, among the charges above alleged that the protesters between July 1 and August 10 2024 in Abuja, Kaduna, Kano and Gombe in collaboration with Andrew Wynne, a British Citizen waged war against the State, in order to intimidate and awe the President by attacking and injuring police officers and destroying strategic public properties and institutions including the Nigerian Communication Commission NCC .
In reaction to this development, Amnesty International Nigeria has condemned the mass trial of the protesters. In a statement credited to their X handle, Amnesty International said “Amnesty International condemns the sham trial of the protesters even before it began, and calls for an end to these endless bizarre attempts to deprive people of the right to peaceful protest. The unfair trial is only a disguised exercise solely aimed at punishing dissenters.
“Some of the charges to be filed against the protesters, ranging from treason, which carries the death penalty and allegations of ‘plans to destabilize Nigeria,’ show how far the Nigerian authorities can go in manipulating the criminal justice system to silence critical voices.
“The Nigerian government has been wrongfully placing priority on punishing protesters, without saying even a word on the urgent need to impartially investigate the killing of dozens of protesters across Kano, Katsina, Suleja/Tafa, Jigawa and Maiduguri.
