A Magistrate Court in Lagos has discharged 6 people who were arresteted in 2020 during the #eEndsars protest that rocked the nation in 2020.
The Protesters identified as Daniel Joyinbo, Azeez Isiaka, Adigun Sodiq, Sodiq Usseni, Kehinde Shola, and Salaudeen Kamilu/. The accused were discharged by Margistrate Bolanle Osunsanmi who also charged them to be of good behaviour.
The charge read out to the defendants dated August 22, charged them with behaving in a manner that could breach public peace, an offence under section 168d of the Lagos State criminal Law of 2015.
The punishment for the said offence is 3 months in prison / fine of 15,00 Naira or both depending on the severity of the actions. The defendants pleaded guilty to the charges and affirmed the understood the implication of their guilty plea.
Osunsanmi, after considering the submissions from both the defendants and plaintiff submissions, acknowledged the time already spent in prison by the defendants.
She said “In light of the fact that these men have been in prison for nearly four years, I find them guilty as charged but will discharge them as they have already spent more than the required term of punishment,”.
Before their release, the magistrate issued a stern warning to the six men, reminding them of the serious consequences of their actions and urging them to be law-abiding citizens in the future.
They acknowledged the warning and finally walked into freedom.
