President Ahmed Bola Tinubu has sworn in Justice Kudirat Keker-Ekun as the 23rd Chief Justice of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The ceremony at the council chambers of State House Abuja also awaits the Senate’s confirmation. She will succeed Ariiwola who retired after attaining the retirement age of 70yrs
Justice Keker-Edun was born in May 1957 in Lagos, obtained her Law Degree in 1980, and was subsequently called to Bar in 1981.
In 1996, Justice Kekere-Ekun was appointed as a Judge of the High Court of Lagos State, where she handled a wide range of cases. Her judicial career took a major step forward in 2004 when she was promoted to the Court of Appeal, one of Nigeria’s top appellate courts. As a Justice of the Court of Appeal, she delivered many important rulings and played a key role in shaping Nigerian law.
On June 8, 2013, Justice Kekere-Ekun was appointed to the Supreme Court of Nigeria, the nation’s highest judicial body. Her appointment was highly acclaimed, and she has since served with great distinction, contributing to landmark decisions that influence the Nigerian legal system.
Justice Kekere-Edun has led landmark cases including the case that brought the current Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodinma to power, sacking Emeka Ihedioha, and the case between Nyesom Wike and Peterside Dakuku, of which she was a member of the Supreme Court Panel.
