8 cases of Mpox recorded in Nigeria as outbreak spreads to19 States and FCT

Nigeria has reported 8 new confirmed cases of Mpox in the last one week. 

The Nigeria Center For Disease Control (NCDC) confirmed that the Mpox virus has spread to 19 states of the Federation and Abuja

NCDC records showed that cases of Mpox has been recorded in Zamfara, Rivers , Bayelsa, Abia Delta , Imo , Edo , FCT , Anambra, Cross River. 

Others are Plateau , Akwa Ibom , Nasarawa , Oyo , Kaduna , Ebonyi , Benue, Enugu, Osun , Kebbi , and Lagos .

57 new suspected cases were reported in Epi week 34, 2024, compared with 25 cases reported in the previous week (Epi week 33).

NCDC records showed that Lagos recorded (one), Rivers (two), Bayelsa (six), Abia (one), Delta (two), Imo (one), Edo (one), FCT (two), Anambra (two), Cross River (five) cases. 

Others are Plateau (two), Akwa Ibom (four), Nasarawa (one), Oyo (one), Kaduna (one), Ebonyi (one), Benue (three), Enugu (eight), Osun (two), Kebbi

However, reports showed that , Nigeria received 10,000 doses of the Jynneos vaccine as a donation from the United States government to help combat the spread of the disease outbreak in the country. 

The vaccine, which is approved by the American FDA was handed over to Nigerian health officials in a ceremony that took place in Abuja

Mpox is a viral zoonotic infectious disease transmitted mostly from animals to humans that occurs sparsely, majorly in remote villages of Central and West Africa, near tropical rainforests.
